I had lived in New York for a few months as a student, and Harlem was a place I wanted to share with Dario and our daughters. I had also written about its history and culture for my master’s thesis. Returning as a parent brought those memories into a different kind of day.

The children needed somewhere to play before a longer walk, and we found it at Playground 123. From there, our visit moved towards West 125th Street, with music, street trade, things to look at and the Apollo’s familiar exterior.

Playground 123 was part of the reason to come back

Our younger daughter was still crawling, and the playground gave both children something to do at their own pace. The older one liked it enough that we returned to Harlem. The play stop was not a delay before the real visit; it was one of the things that made the day work.

NYC Parks lists 123rd Street Playground within Morningside Park. The local Friends of Morningside Park organisation identifies its restroom at West 123rd Street and Morningside Avenue. Check current park notices and facilities for your visit rather than relying on our old comments about equipment, cleanliness or staff. 1 2

Choose the actual entrance and journey, particularly with a stroller. There is more than one station called 125th Street, and a station name alone does not tell you the walking distance or whether the route you want is step-free. Morningside Park also has a hillside; one playground’s facilities do not describe every path through the park.

What I wanted my family to see

Harlem was connected with a period when I was learning my way around New York as a student. Bringing my family back was a chance to share a place that already mattered to me, rather than simply choosing another stop from a visitor list.

Respect for the community matters when visiting Harlem. The useful attitude is to pay attention, treat people respectfully and make ordinary practical decisions about your route, belongings and the children’s energy.

Our longer New York family journal explains the rhythm that helped the whole stay: playgrounds, museums, walks and enough time between them for the city to feel like more than a sequence of attractions.

Walk West 125th Street without rushing the details

We remember street sellers, music, colours and conversations. I bought an Erykah Badu T-shirt from a seller we also photographed. It was a small purchase, but it became part of the personal memory of returning.

Along the walk we passed the Apollo and looked at street art. The point was not to treat residents or their everyday lives as a performance for visitors. We were walking through a neighbourhood, noticing what interested us and leaving room for the ordinary interactions of a day outside.

The Aretha Franklin plaque below was one detail we photographed near the theatre. It records our exterior visit and interest in the place; it is not evidence that we attended a show or toured the inside.

The Apollo’s current venue matters

As checked on 18 October 2026, the Apollo’s own visitor page says the Historic Theater is closed for renovation, with reopening expected in late 2026. An expected date is not confirmation that the building will be open on the day you choose. 3

The Apollo Stages at The Victoria are a separate venue nearby. Check the precise address, stage, programme and age or admission requirements on the event you are considering. Do not assume that an event under the Apollo name takes place in the historic main auditorium. 3

Our old marquee photograph is part of the street memory. Its programme and sponsor dates should not be used as current event information.

Let the day fit the people walking

A playground and a neighbourhood walk were enough to make Harlem a meaningful part of our stay. If children are tired after play, a shorter walk can still be a good outing. Leave time to eat, rest and make the return journey without having to add one more stop.

I came back wanting to show my family a place I loved. What made the visit our own was the combination of older memories and the children’s new ones: a familiar street for me, a playground they wanted to see again and small details we could take home in photographs.

Plan the visit

Know before you go

Playground 123 — Morningside Park

Plan your time
Start at the lower playground side rather than planning a stroller route across the park’s hillside steps.
Booking & access
An ordinary family playground visit is not an event booking; organised events have separate permit rules.

Friends of Morningside Park identifies a wheelchair-accessible restroom at Playground 123, West 123rd Street and Morningside Avenue.

The Apollo — Historic Theater and Victoria venues

Plan your time
Combine the neighbourhood walk with a performance only if the particular show suits your children’s ages and energy.
Booking & access
Choose the named performance and venue before booking; an exterior walk past the historic frontage is not a show ticket.

The official visitor page says the Historic Theater is closed for renovation and expected to reopen in late 2026.

Good to know

A couple of useful questions

Did we see a show at the Apollo?

No performance or interior tour is described in the original account. Our photographs show the exterior and the Aretha Franklin pavement plaque.

Can I assume the Historic Theater is open now?

No. The Apollo currently reports renovation closure and an expected late-2026 reopening. Check the event’s actual venue and the latest visitor information. 3

Does every 125th Street station lead to the same short walk?

No. Check the specific subway line, exit, entrance and access needs for Playground 123 or the part of Harlem you want to visit.
