Before our first family journey to Thailand, we thought about the ordinary things that would shape a day: moving between places, finding food and supplies, making time to sleep and knowing where to get help if someone became ill. Those questions mattered as much as choosing a beach or a temple.

The trip gave us memorable train journeys, busy cities and time on Koh Samui. What follows is the experience we can describe, with a clearer separation between our old impressions and the information a family needs before booking now.

Start with the actual route and each traveller

Discuss the complete itinerary and each child’s age and health with a travel-health professional. CDC’s Thailand guidance is route-specific: a country name alone does not determine malaria precautions, vaccinations or the other health preparations appropriate to a journey. 1

For mosquito protection, CDC lists DEET among recognised repellent ingredients and tells parents to follow product labels and child-use precautions. It excludes OLE and PMD products for children under three. Choose an age-appropriate, locally authorised product with professional advice for your itinerary. 2

The practical plan also includes insurance that covers the journey and activities, any regular medicines, and information about accessing care. Keep those details with the travel documents instead of trying to reconstruct them during a difficult moment.

Our night train towards Koh Samui

We took a night train from Bangkok to Surat Thani, followed by a bus and ferry towards Koh Samui. The connections worked smoothly for us on that journey, and the combination made travelling a substantial distance feel manageable.

For a new booking, check each part of the chain: the actual departure station, train and class, arrival time, bus meeting point, ferry terminal and final journey to the room. Ask whether separate tickets or one combined product is being sold, and what happens if the train is late.

The State Railway of Thailand’s official D-Ticket portal is a starting point for checking current rail services and booking conditions. It does not establish the terms of every onward bus or ferry connection, which must be confirmed with the seller of that part of the journey. 3

Shorter trains and trips around a city

On journeys such as Bangkok to Ayutthaya, we enjoyed a third-class carriage with open windows and local passengers. It suited the outing we wanted. For your own booking, compare the route, duration and seating rather than choosing a class name on its own.

The old fare comparison has been left out. Train types, seating and ticket conditions differ, so compare the actual service you want. Consider ventilation, noise, journey length, toilets, luggage and where the children can sit securely.

We also used different forms of city transport. Their presence in our photographs does not show that every boat, taxi or tuk-tuk provides suitable restraints or a comfortable journey for your family. Confirm the practical arrangement before getting in, including the destination and how the price is calculated.

Food, supplies and somewhere to settle

We found food, groceries and diapers without the advance packing that had shaped some of our earlier trips elsewhere. That made everyday travel easier for us. A new family should still carry enough essentials for the first stage, especially if a child needs a particular brand, diet or medicine.

With accommodation, the questions are concrete: how you reach the entrance, where everyone sleeps, whether there is a fridge or useful kitchen access, and what is nearby if the day ends earlier than planned. A photograph of a lovely room cannot answer all of them.

The courtyard shrine below is one detail we noticed during the trip. Its exact venue is not established, so it is not being used to recommend a named hotel or temple. Small observations can belong in the journal without becoming a booking claim.

Choose fewer stages and make them work

Our Bangkok arrival journal describes the first days, the heat and a change of plans. It is a useful companion to these transport notes because reaching a city and settling into it are different parts of the same journey.

For Koh Samui, read our elephant-visit account. It follows the morning we spent watching the animals and explains the welfare questions we would use when choosing a programme.

A good family route is one whose ordinary parts you can manage. Leave time between connections, plan a first meal and a place to rest, and choose the next stage because it fits the people travelling rather than because it fills an empty space on a map.

Plan the visit

Know before you go

Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal

Plan your time
Book adjacent places for your party and build a connection buffer before any separately booked bus or ferry.
Booking & access
Use SRT D-Ticket for the actual origin, destination, date, carriage and available seat or berth; reserve a sleeper rather than relying on walk-up availability.

The Thai government identifies Krung Thep Aphiwat as the long-distance terminal for northern, northeastern and southern services.

Surat Thani Railway Station

Plan your time
Save the exact onward pickup location before departure and keep the first day on Koh Samui free of a fixed excursion.
Booking & access
Rail tickets and onward bus/ferry arrangements may be separate products; confirm the meeting point and missed-connection terms with the seller.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand describes rail travel from Bangkok’s Aphiwat station to Surat Thani station.

Good to know

A couple of useful questions

Does a Bangkok stay establish health precautions for all Thailand?

No. Take the full route and each traveller’s details to a travel-health professional. CDC’s destination page helps identify topics to discuss. 1

Are the old train prices and class comparisons current?

No. They describe particular earlier services. Check the actual train, class and booking terms through the official railway information and your chosen seller. 3

Is a train, bus and ferry connection always protected as one booking?

The original account does not establish that. Check whether tickets are combined or separate, who handles delays and how you reach the final accommodation.
